Other Issues in Media and Society

Hello ! Today I would like to recommend you some other great blogs about the issues in social media by my classmates, which I was reading in the past days. They are all very good, and all of them contain great information. I chose 5 of them that were the most interesting for me and that I liked the most.

Topic: Violence in Media

Author: Ali Samah

Comments: This blog is about the violence in media, and its circumstances. Author understands this topic very well and it is clear that he made a great research. The blog is also well structured, it has great visuals and some videos aswell, which helps to understand his posts better. 10/10 for me and you should definitely check it!

Topic: Fashion in Media

Author: Anastazija Cvetanovska

Comments: This blog is about the fashion in the media, and the advertising of fashion on social media. There are several great posts, the one I have to mention is about the power of advertising on the social media, which was for me the best, and the most interesting one. Author of the blog seems that she understands the topic very well and that it was fun for her making it. 10/10 for me and you should definitely check it!

Topic: Deepfakes in Media

Author: Mariia Petrova

Comments: This blog is about the deepfakes in the media, which are mostly edited videos that look like real but they are actually edited. the videos are a media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced with someone else. Nowadays, the videos are so good that you really can’t tell the difference, and especially now, with the current events, this topic can be very dangerous for the society and for the world. I was very pleased to read through this blog because author made it very well, and it is definitely 10/10 for me and is worth checking!

Topic: The impact of Media on children

Author: Daniela Hartmanová

Comments: This blog is about the impact that media can have on children. I knew that the time that children spend on watching TV, or on social media such as Instagram, Tiktok is increasing, but I was shocked by the actual % of the increase, that author wrote in her post. This is a big problem nowadays I think and it is definitely needed to reduce the time spend on social media by children, mostly by parents. The blog was very easy to read and its another 10/10 from me!

Topic: Profit-Driven stereotyping in media

Author: Lisa Persheva

Comments: this blog is mostly about the money in the media. About how the media are hungry for money. The post that catched my eye here was about the TikTok trends, particularly “That Girl” trend. The trend is to show their “perfect productive and healthy” life by videos and photos. But in reality it can be very exhausting for some, and many of the girls actually do this only for the views that they can gain by it. The visuals are great on the blog and I can’t do anything else than give another 10/10. Great blog!

For Further Research

Hello everyone!

In today’s post, I would like to let you guys know about some of the websites that relate to this topic and that you should definitely check out if you are interested in the violence in sports. As it is really hard to find any website that is completely concentrated on Violence in Sports, I would like to address you these ones:

First one is https://www.athletenetwork.com/blog - The website is fully concentrated on athletes, who are part of sport. It is not only about the violence, but you can find many good articles about the violence on there.

Second one is https://bleacherreport.com/ - Again, the website concentrates on sports, but there are also several well typed articles about the violence, I particularly loved one about violence contributing to injuries of players, which is also an issue.

The third is not one, but more sites. In general, in any national media, for example „The Guardian“ „New York Times“ or from Czech Republic – „Idnes.sport“ you can find many articles about violence and sports. Mostly the controversial things that famous athletes done, such as my two posts about Mason Greenwood and Kurt Zouma.

So That is the websites I reccomend checking out, if you are interested in the same topic as I am, and I hope you enjoyed my blog!

What the experts say II

Hello everyone!
I have another great article for you, and because I want to be more broad in terms of sports at this blog, this one is mostly about tennis. Since I was little, my grandfather always took me on a pitch to play with me, so I like this sport aswell. The article I will be talking about today is explaining how endorsement of contracts of athletes can be way more relevant than their performance on the pitch, and how all are at stake when allegations of misconduct arise (Penn Today, 2021). I also used this article in the post „my view“ as there were quite interesting informations. For example, that throughout 2019, Alexander Zverev's (Professional Tennis player) then-girlfriend, Olya Sharypova, accused him of domestic assault, which included both physical and emotional abuse. Sharypova shared her tale as a warning to others who are dealing with violent partners. And during the last US Open, there was a Rolex ad, in which he was featured, and it made many people angry.  Make sure to check the article and leave any comments here if you would like to, see you again soon!

What the experts say I

Hello guys!

Today I have a great study I found about the domestic violence in the National Football League (NFL) which I would like to share with you! I already used some information in the post „my view“ from this study, but I need to tell you more about it. The purpose of this study was to see if there was a link between domestic violence incidences involving National Football League (NFL) players and the league's popularity. With increasing media attention on players' off-field exploits, there was a risk that players committing horrible crimes like domestic abuse would have an impact on how consumers consumed NFL merchandise. (Coyne, 2017). It is not about football, like most of my posts are, but it is about American Football, which I also find very interesting, and there is ton of violence. It goes with the game, but on the pitch, it is acceptable, but with limits! The players are violent, but in respectful way. You should definitely check this study out, because it has many great and intereseting informations and very surprising results.

My View

Hello! In today's post I will be telling you about my view on the topic in more academic way than in the other posts, I hope you will like it.

Domestic violence and sexual abuse incidents involving professional athletes are regularly covered in the media. Domestic abuse is the most common felony among professional football players, accounting for 55 percent of all charges (Giovannone, 2021). According to statistics, 134 athletes have been charged with domestic violence, and 15 have been charged with sexual assault, abuse, or harassment since 2000, accounting for 13 percent of all football league convictions (Giovannone, 2021). Considering the fame of many sports players, their actions have negative consequences not only on their personal lives, brands they work with, and leagues but the young audience that seeks to become like their role models.

The history of domestic abuse and sexual assaults on famous athletes has a long history. Before the 1970s, there was an unofficial policy that nobody could discuss the athletes' personal lives off the field (Penn Today, 2021). However, according to Wyner, head of the undergraduate department in statistics at the Wharton School, it started to crumble in the 1970s (Penn Today, 2021). The book Ball Four, released in 1970, disregarded the guidelines. The publication highlighted baseball stars' misdemeanors, transgressions, and addictions (Penn Today, 2021). It was momentous since it signaled a shift in perception of the sports stars.

Now, more incidents have started to gain a lot of media attention. For example, Alexander Zverev, a German tennis player, was one of the players featured in the US Open in 2021 and was ranked fourth (Penn Today, 2021). However, two years before, Zverev's partner, Olya Sharypova, directly accused the player of domestic violence, which involved verbal and physical mistreatment (Penn Today, 2021). The woman shared her experience in the expectation that it would serve as a caution to those in abusive relationships and in hopes that the Association of Tennis Professionals would take action (Penn Today, 2021). However, the star's reputation was not affected, and during the US Open event, Zverev was chosen to be the Rolex ambassador alongside other famous players (Penn Today, 2021). When the brand named Zverev their ambassador, several individuals expressed anger and even disgust on Twitter, but the comments did not receive much support.

However, domestic violence is a problem not only in the tennis league. It is the most prevalent issue in the National Football League. Domestic abuse cases of the biggest notoriety include the arrest in 1995 of player Warren Moon for domestic battery (Coyne, 2017). It was typical for athletes to be detained, but there was a slew of occurrences that went unreported (Coyne, 2017). Former professional football Commissioner Paul Tagliabue was more concerned with working on the projects than with the athletes' off-field activities (Coyne, 2017). Roger Goodell considered it a personal challenge when he became chief to restore the image of the league and maintain a good reputation.

Hence, it can be seen that domestic violence and sexual assaults in the sports field, in the majority of cases, go unnoticed. However, sports stars are idolized by fans who pay great attention to their behavior and actions. In this case, role models may have a significant impact on how fans feel about a club or league and encourage emulation of the same attitude. Although every sports league holds a status in the entertainment business, each league's and athlete's societal significance owes it to the community to do more to eradicate domestic abuse and promote appropriate behavior.

West Ham’s star youngster Kurt Zouma filmed kicking and throwing things at his cat (Current events 2)

Hello everyone !
Today’s post would be about another promising footballer, namely Kurt Zouma, who plays for West Ham United in the Premier League. He has been filmed kicking, slapping and throwing things at his cat and the video was then posted on social media – Snapchat. He was also chasing the cat around the kitchen, while the person who was filming it (Many people say it was his brother) was laughing and having fun of that. Zouma, who is currently 27 years old, was also throwing sneakers at the cat while it tried to run away. People think he was doing this because he was angry at the cat because it made a mess in the house, but I don’t see any mess in the videos! His brother then said that “It seemed that Kurt got angry at the cat for accidentally smashing some sort of vase and tearing down a light fixture from the kithcen cupboard. But what he does next is completely unacceptable. Kurt kicks it, throws shoes at it and then slaps it. The poor cat looked so scared.“ (Shennan, 2022). The video can be found here: https://news.sky.com/video/the-video-of-west-ham-footballer-kurt-zouma-abusing-his-cat-12537440. After the video went viral and people started talking about it, Zouma uploaded a video on his social media where he was apologizing and saying that he regrets these actions and that he would never do it again. He was also apologizing to all the people he could have made upset because of that video, and he assured that the cat was perfectly fine and healthy. His former club, West Ham United stated „We have spoken to Kurt and will be dealing with the matter internally, but we would like to make it clear that we in no way condone cruelty towards animals.“ (West Ham, 2022). However he was not dropped out of the squad for next matches like Mason Greenwood was (from the previous post). So, I would like to ask you guys a question, do you think he should have been punished somehow? In my opinion, it is completely same case like Mason Greenwood’s, maybe even worse, because the poor animal couldn’t even resist. Animals love us and we should love them, and I am strongly against being violent on animals, so I hope Kurt Zouma will never do that again and that he learned from this and would never be cruel again.

Famous football young star Mason Greenwood was arrested over accusation of rape assault and domestic violence against his girlfriend (Current events 1)

Hey everyone,

I am writing this post to let you know about current event that is happening about the young football star Mason Greenwood, who was arrested because he was accused of rape assault and domestic violence against his girlfriend. The charges were published early Sunday (End of February 2022) on Instagram, where videos, pictures, and a voice note appeared to show Greenwood and a lady conversing. Since then, the social media post has been removed. All posts that his girlfriend posted on Instagram, which were deleted, you can find here: https://twitter.com/i/status/1487739365321228290. The girl showed many photos of her body with bruises, and also a short video of her face covered in blood, she claims that it was all done by her violent “boyfriend” Mason Greenwood. After speaking to the detectives and the police, Greenwood was released on bail and since then he kept extremely low profile and refused to talk about the issue in public. His former club, Manchester United, removed him from the squad right after he was arrested, but fans found out that he was still on their website, so the club stated: “We removed his profile from the club app soon after he was removed from the squad in January. This was in order to remove Mason from interactive elements of the app, such as predictions etc. However, his profile was never removed from the website as he remains our player, albeit not currently part of the squad while the legal process unfold.” I think that it is important that the fans do want him to be completely kicked out of the club, same as Nike, his partners did, they cancelled his contract and they do not want to be connected with him anymore after these disgusting events. It is important that he gets punished, so that the people and his fans would not take an example from him and would avoid doing this, because it can have bad consequences, like getting kicked from the club or from the contract with Nike. What do you guys think about this ? Should the club also remove him from their website, since he is still their player, but it is not likely that he will ever play for them again in the future, after it is all over. Let me know in the comments down below!
